Co-founder of San Luis Distance Club to be honored on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at event’s race day awards ceremony

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — (March 31, 2015) — The directors of the San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon + 5K are proud to announce that San Luis Obispo runner Stan Rosenfield will be inducted into the event’s Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 26, 2015 during the race day awards ceremony. Rosenfield has been running since his teens and has completed more than 1,200 races, in addition to officiating at several hundred more. In his day, Rosenfield broke 3 hours in the marathon, at that time the qualifying standard for the storied Boston Marathon.

Best known as “the heart and soul” of the San Luis Obispo Distance Club, which he co-founded with Brian Waterbury in 1973, Rosenfield began running cross country in high school and continued in college at Occidental in Los Angeles. At the age of 67, Stan can still be seen on the roads and trails of San Luis Obispo, enjoying the sport with his dog.

The SLO Distance Club was formed by Rosenfield and Waterbury to promote road racing on the beautiful central coast of California. Together they produced many races, including a marathon in 1973. Since its inception, the SLO Distance Club has fostered the growth of thousands of local runners.

Mary Cooper, a longtime member of the club, says that Stan is the point upon which the Distance Club turns, while Heidi Harrison, a SLO Distance Club officer, calls Stan the “Omnipotent One” for his astonishing recall of racing statistics of local runners. As editor of the SLODC newsletter, Stan knits together the runners of the area by publishing statistics, race announcements and results.

Rosenfield finds the SLO running community active and inclusive, with opportunities for all ages and abilities, from elite athletes to youth. He believes the opportunities for runners in SLO are comparable to those in a larger city, with the added benefits of traffic-free roads, long beaches and dedicated open space trails. The completion of the Bob Jones Trail, Rosenfield says, will be a big boost to the SLO running profile.

Roger Warnes, inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2014, said: “As the unofficial historian of local running, Stan is the reason our SLO running community is so well-connected and friendly. Through his work with the SLO Distance Club and as race director of many events in the early days of running, Stan galvanized the SLO running community and helped make it the fitness and running capital it is today.”

Following is a list of SLO Marathon Hall of Fame recipients:

  • 2012: Pete Dorn and Brian Waterbury
  • 2013: Greg Hinds
