Get Off The Couch Potato Sports Productions Acquires SLO GranFondo — Registration Opens

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — Get Off The Couch Potato Sports Productions, LLC, owners of the San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon + 5K and the Central Coast Cancer Challenge, has acquired the former SLO GranFondo and rebranded the event to Giro Della Costa Centrale: A Classic Italian Cycling Festival. Couch Potato Sports acquired the race from the non-profit Alpha who created the event in 2010 with the help of Bob and Tess Stapleton. The new event will take place on Sunday, November 9, 2014 and registration is now open.

“We’re extremely excited to be producing the new Giro Della Costa Centrale,” says Heather Hellman, Event Director. “We plan to build upon the success of the former SLO GranFondo and feature four new cycling routes — a challenging GranFondo (100-miles) and MedioFondo (100K), a new women’s only event FemmeFondo and an easier PicoloFondo (25-mile ride).”

All rides will start at Trilogy Resort at Monarch Dunes, a 5-star resort with spa, golf course and Shea Homes. All rides will leave the resort and traverse the Central Coast, riding along the Pacific Coast Highway and deep into the Santa Ynez Valley wine country.

SLO GranFondo: New 100-Mile route for 2014! The SLO GranFondo (Godfather of ALL RIDES!) is a breathtaking and challenging tour of both San Luis Obispo County coastal dunes and Santa Barbara County wine country back roads. For advanced to expert riders, the ride has over 5,000 feet of elevation gain.

MedioFondo: The 61-Mile MedioFondo is equally magnifico, though not quite as challenging as the SLO GranFondo, allowing riders to enjoy the bi-county coastal and wine country beauty without the “Suffer Fest!” This ride is for intermediate-to-advanced riders.

FemmeFondo: The 50-Mile women’s only FemmeFondo will have its own separate start and provide the right balance of challenge and fantastico feminine fun! It follows the GranFondo route with more modest climbing over rolling green hills. This ride is for intermediate-to-advanced riders.

PiccoloFondo: The 25-Mile PiccoloFondo ride is for the beginner to intermediate cyclist. It welcomes recreational, family or weekend warriors who want to enjoy the beauty of the Nipomo Mesa, surrounding foothills and have plenty of time to experience make the classic bike rally and soak up the sun at Festivale Italiano.

First-class amenities for each registered rider includes and inaugural event t-shirt, well-stocked AID Stations with FLUID Sports drink, CLIF Shots, salty and sweet snacks along each route, chip timing to track progress, mechanical and sag support from Flanders Bicycle and a hot pasta lunch afterward. Each ride will award a first place specially designed pink jersey, “a la Giro d”Italia,” and the event will award a jersey to the top fundraising individual or team.

As in years past, the Giro Della Costa Centrale will benefit Alpha and the Hearst Cancer Resource Center at French Hospital Medical Center. Riders can fundraise individually or as a team with great incentives for reaching fundraising goals, including an invitation to the VIP Reception on Saturday, November 8th. There, riders can meet and mingle with the pro riders, team riders and special guests.

In addition to the new routes, the Giro Della Costa Centrale will also feature Festivale Italiano, a finish line party for riders and their guests, and a Classic Bike Rally with vintage rides. The festivale will immerse riders in “La Dolce Vita” with Italian foods, wines, beer and classic Italian music. Riders can relax at the world-class resort, listen to music and enjoy a hot meal. There will be merchandise and vendors with the latest bikes and gear.
