RACE SLO TRIBE: ROBERT NEWTON

Race SLO #EnduranceTownUSA features articles from our Tribe throughout the year to inspire and motivate you to reach your finish line. Robert Newton went from self-described average guy to ultra endurance athlete, while launching a five-year project "Pushing 4 Change". Below is Robert's story. You can join Robert at the SLO Marathon + Half on April 28-29, 2018.

RACE SLO TRIBE: ROBERT NEWTON

In 2015 I created a five year project, Pushing 4 Change, to chronicle my journey from average guy to ultra endurance athlete. This idea was sparked during 2014 when I fasted from technology for a year in an effort to inspire others to break away from our largely technology-fueled lives. It bothered me to see so many people living in a virtual world instead of seeking tangible experiences in the world around them. This led me to the world of ultra endurance sports.

Once I decided to pursue ultra endurance sports, I knew I wanted to simultaneously give something back to the world to prove that one person can make positively impact those around them. As an avid animal lover working with multiple rescue groups, the choice to base my project on animal welfare was an easy one. During the last two years, I've run 23 races, including 14 ultras / marathons, and raised more than $10,000 for rescues from California to Afghanistan. During that time, my wife and I also founded Diego Farms, a farm animal sanctuary in southern California where we currently house 23 animals on our 12 acre property.

On April 29th, 2018 I'll be running the SLO Marathon in San Luis Obispo, California for my 21st Marathon. That in itself is a crazy number to me. I never enjoyed running and didn't begin my running "career" until I was 27-years-old. Three years ago I would of thought it was a pipe dream to cross the finish line of a marathon, let alone a 100 mile ultra. I never thought I'd not only set the goal of running my 100th marathon before my 40th birthday, but fully believe I was capable of accomplishing it. If there is anything I'd like the running community to take away from my project, it's this: If you're willing to put in the work and let go of the excuses, you are capable of anything. 'Good enough is not good enough if it can be better. Better is not good enough if it can be best.'
